Senior Garianne Levy has been nothing short of remarkable as a student athlete. Noted for her effort and drive as both a student and a wrestler, Levy sets the bar high.
As a part of Benson’s athletics, she has participated in volleyball, wrestling, tennis and track. Achieving success on the wrestling mat, being ranked and reaching state.
“A strong trait that has helped me reach this amount of success was being dedicated,” Levy said. “I always give it my all and never back down from a challenge.”
Staying disciplined is a vital piece of Levy’s character and preparation. It is what allows her to stay consistent in her effort and mindset during the season.
Staying motivated is an important factor as well. It is a team effort to stay on top of the energy that drives them as a collective.
“During the season I stay motivated by setting a goal for myself, such as to not have a ton of losses,” Levy said. “But as a team it feels great because we can talk about how we feel about certain things and practice with each other when we get home.”
But, as a student athlete, the balance of both school and sports takes its toll. Levy takes measures to prepare to reduce the amount of stress at one time.
“I balance being a student athlete by trying to stay on top of and get all my schoolwork done in class,” Levy said. “I do this, so I don’t have to miss practice, and so that when I get home, I have time to relax and recover my body.”
Levy’s footwork is a highlight of her technique, drawing comparisons from the footwork of boxers. It is her motor that allows her to outlast and wear down her opponents.
“What goes through my mind during a match is to stay moving,” Levy said. “To make my opponent tired, confused and in a spot where they can’t touch me or get their moves to work on me.”
However, as a senior, Levy has a responsibility to help encourage and develop the next generation of student athletes.
“I would tell them to stay focused on your sport and always have a good profile,” Levy said. “Stay dedicated even when you feel like you fell short and have the right people in your corner to help push, motivate and support you.
Through her four sports, Levy has had ample opportunities to study and have tutelage under a variety of coaches.
“Something that stands out the most to me no matter the sport is the coaching staff,” said Levy. “They always go above and beyond to provide, protect and care for their students.”
Reflecting on how far she has gone, Levy is proud of her journey.
“I would say my wrestling career at Benson has been a success,” Levy said. “I have come father than I could’ve ever imagined.”
