Athletes are known for the dedication and the hard work they put into their sports. But with the option to take three sports a year, what does it look like for one of these all-season athletes, and is it really worth it?
Senior Maya Coleman has done three sports a year, soccer, cross country, and swim. That is, until their senior year, where they decided to stick with just swimming.
“I dislike how much it fills up my schedule,” Coleman said. “I can’t even visit all of the other clubs and activities I’m a part of.”
Taking such a large toll on time, this type of commitment Coleman did not leave room for the rest of their life.
“Both practices and games make it very hard to keep up with any other weekly plans, so having three sports a year was super draining,” Coleman said.
But now that they have the time, Coleman can commit to their role as the bunny’s swim captain. With a lot to work on, they have a focus on their relationship as a team and comradery.
“As swim team captain, I usually try to help other swimmers with their form,” Coleman said. “I help my teammates stay calm before events. I just try to cheer people on to make sure they’re doing alright”
After spending so much time with their team, they all feel like a little community to Coleman.
“I love the people on the swim team more than I love the sport,” Coleman said. “Everyone is so very distinct in personality and every time we go eat food together after practices and meets it genuinely feels like a loving dysfunctional family.”
To Coleman, this is the most important part of high school sports.
“They (students) should remember to always connect with your teammates as much as you can, no matter the sport.”
Now at the end of their high school career, Coleman has garnered a lot of experience throughout all these sports and activities.
“It helps me be good at teamwork and team leading, and it keeps me fit and entertains my adrenaline addiction,” Coleman said.
While committing to all these sports has been an important part of their years at high school now, it might not have been the best choice for Coleman, or for many other students.
“I wish so much that I quit more sports and joined the artsy clubs I’m in now sooner,” Coleman said.
