Starting a virtuoso’s journey: following her own passion for music

Freshmen Choungklain Neing is dedicated to becoming a musician in her future.

From everyday music radio to the distinct hums and lullabies from different cultures, music surrounds all of society.

The life of a future virtuoso begins with ambition. At the age of eight, freshman Choungklain Neing expressed this to her family and friends, following this Neing became goal-driven to become a version of herself that she enjoyed.

“Music is my inspiration, and a long-term goal is to play many instruments well,” Neing said. “I want to work towards being very talented in music because it connects me with my everyday life.”

Wanting to find a good starting point, Neing began brainstorming ideas on how to become better at an instrument.

“Firstly, I needed to get a grasp of what I can do to get better,” Neing said.

With a good plan, the next step was discovering the different options for growth.

“Secondly, I needed to find which instruments I wanted to learn,” Neing said. “I also needed to make sure that I was available and did not lack any days to lose some practice time.”

With the foundations made, the final step was to execute the plan.

Setting a strict schedule, Neing focuses on one instrument per day. For example, on Monday she would practice Piano, Tuesday Tenor Sax, Wednesday Guitar, Thursday Drums, Friday Vocal Music, Saturday and Sunday Songs.

“Even though I play so many instruments, I take extra time and prefer practicing drums the most,” Neing said.

Some hardships that Neing faces are the factors of her real life. At home, Neing deals with chores and homework.

“I must balance my personal life and school life while trying to pursue my own goals,” Neing said.

Neing does not have any regrets on her own path to becoming a musician; other than not starting when she was younger.

“I might have been able to master one instrument by then,” Neing said.

Historical music composers like Frederic Chopin and Ludwig van Beethoven have inspired Neing in her pursuit to musical mastery.  So, without a doubt, a future virtuoso’s journey has only just begun.

“I will reach my goal and make my friends and family proud,” Neing said.
