The average perception is that AP classes are harder than other classes. However, there is not something that definitively shows why certain classes are AP.
AP classes are not only hard, they can give college credits, which also makes a difference between normal classes. The work, homework and topics are around the college work level.
“The standard for AP classes has to be rigorous for students,” AP coordinator Hollis Murphy said. “It can be taken as a college level class, all the work, homework must meet the college level of work.
Despite the fact AP classes are college level classes, they allow any students to take them. However, they check how a student is doing in the class before they change it to AP.
“Teachers, Counselors and Parents can recommend them to take the class,” Murphy said. “Or if they met the pre-requisite anyone can choose the AP class, as long as they don’t have a problem in the current class they are taking.”
AP classes are meant to be taken with care and attentiveness, In AP Human Geography, students take it seriously and they do not have an issue doing the work inside the class.
“Students in my class listen to what I say, and they do their work since isn’t too hard,” AP human geography teacher Shaun Behrens said. “They have more critical thinking than the other classes I teach, so they don’t have a problem with anything.”
One of the seniors in this school, has taken AP before. From both Westview and in Benson. She did not think the AP classes in Westview were a challenge for her.
“In Westview, I took AP seminar for English, it wasn’t too hard,” senior Addison Gibson said. “It was mostly making projects and giving speeches.”
Even if the AP classes at Westview were easy for her, it did not mean the AP classes here at Benson weren’t easy for her as well. The only other class she had a problem with was AP chemistry.
“I don’t think the AP classes here at Benson are hard,” Addison said. “The only class I struggled with was AP chemistry because we only got through five out of the seven lessons for the class, however the teacher was nice.”
