April 18th marks the date for the iconic dance represented in every teenage-inspired movie— prom. This tradition has lasted for centuries at Benson under the leadership of students willing to take charge of organizing the event.
Student council focuses on preparing for prom by hosting weekly meetings throughout spring to ensure the special dance is a success.
“It’s important (to prepare early) so we’re not rushing to buy things last minute and everything can go well,” President Amina Gedo said. “planning early helps us make sure prom is put together and enjoyable for everyone.”
Every member stresses the importance of preparing early for an event like this, especially following past year’s mistakes.
“In previous years, especially last year when I was junior senator, we started organizing about two weeks out of prom,” vice president Gage Novak said. “It was the worst decision ever.”
Preparation is led by secretary Maya Apedjinou and the prom committee. The committee is split into four groups focused on organizing the tables, ballroom, the entrance, the photo booth and advertising.
“When I advertise for prom I try to make sure our posters fit the theme and add important details of the dance,” advertising committee member Lay Lay Oo said. “such as the date, the location and the time.”
As a member of the advertisement committee, Oo focuses on making sure information is shared to every member of the student body. With the help of Oo and other members, student council is focused on the major components of the dance.
“The most important thing we’re trying to figure out is the decorations, especially the entrance in the photo booth,” Novak said. “I also think another very important thing is the food, a lot of people have different opinions.”
The officers would not be able to do this without the help of the student body.
“Students can help by giving ideas, participating in votes and respecting all the work that goes into planning prom,” Gedo said.
The differences in opinions comes with conflict, yet officers remain hopeful for the big day.
“I’m most excited to see everything come together and to watch everyone enjoy the night,” Gedo said.
