While this year may be lacking post-prom magic, there’s a glimmer of hope on the horizon, with the potential for a reimagined and revitalized post-prom experience in the years to come. Traditionally held within the school premises, post-prom brings students together for a night filled with immersive entertainment, camaraderie, and lasting memories. Once the formalities of prom have concluded, those opting for the post-prom experience willingly embrace the prospect of being “locked in” the school until the early morning hours.
While the notion of spending the night confined within school walls might raise eyebrows initially, rest assured, the event’s organizers have crafted an experience where boredom is the last thing on anyone’s mind.
“I would be very interested in going,” shared Luis Garcia Alvarez (12), expressing his enthusiasm. “I think something like a game trailer but indoors – a section with video games, bouncy houses or those bouncy ball suits where you can bump into others, and some form of catering would be super cool to see happen.”
Taking the helm as Benson High’s Principal in the 2022-2023 school year, Melinda Bailey acknowledges some hesitation when it comes to approving post-prom.
“My only hesitation is truly supervision of the post-prom. I like the idea of having it off-site, which would lessen the need for staff to attend,” Principal Bailey explained. “I would hope to see activities like food, games, giveaways – it would really be up to what students want. Students would need to attend booster club meetings since the booster club is in charge of post-prom.” Bailey stated when asked how students can participate in the post-prom decision making process.
With the upcoming post-prom at Benson High generating excitement, Assistant Principal Kristen Hughes adds a personal touch to the anticipation by sharing her own experience.
“My post-prom was at a bowling alley, about half of my class attended, and it was run by StuCo and parents,” Hughes said, “I went my junior year, but I did not attend my senior year because I made my own plans with a small group of my closest friends.” These personal insights into the diverse nature of post-prom events contribute to the anticipation and excitement surrounding this year’s celebration.
Anticipation builds as students prepare to immerse themselves in an assortment of engaging games, tantalizing food offerings, and an abundance of entertainment options. From arcade games to themed photo booths, post-prom transforms the school into a non-stop fun hub.
“I would love to see students making memories. That all depends on the students and their hopes and outlook for what this event should look like,” Chemistry Teacher Joseph Devlin stated. “I’ve witnessed post-proms with bouncy houses, card tables, VR headsets, magicians, and bowling. I hope that whatever happens at post-prom, everyone is able to create a positive memory that they will talk about long after they leave Benson High.”
