Open campuses, the good, the bad & the ugly

Omaha public schools refuse to implement open campuses

Right now, there are no open campuses in Omaha Public Schools due to its policy, but students and staff are demanding them.

According to The Register, students, staff and parents are saying yes for an open campus, they believe students have many opportunities during lunch and they believe students will have better behaviors, investment and ultimately want to study harder.

Millard Public Schools offers an open campus. It’s restricted to only junior and seniors, but only those with passing grades and a 90 percent attendance are allowed to leave school with parental consent. Students at Millard Public Schools view the open campus policy as an opportunity for fostering independence, time management, and a mental break from a school day.

Opinions on an open campus are mixed with supporters and concerns about student’s safety. There are pros and cons about an open campus; according to The Spartan, the pros are more freedom, increased food opportunities and more trust given to the students. The con of an open campus is traffic safety concerns, no time for eating and unhealthy food opinions.

If Omaha Public School is willing to do an open campus for students, they should follow the blueprint and policy as Millard Public Schools, as only those who have a 90 percent attendance and passing grades are allowed to leave.

As a student I believe Omaha public schools district should do an open campus as I see students at lunch not eating school lunch due to the food options. If Omaha public schools do an open campus, students can learn time management, responsibility and the possibility to have better lunch.

Reasons why Omaha Public Schools do not want an open campus is that the belief students will not return on time, citing traffic safety and monitoring students off campus.
