In the last 30 years, teen pregnancy rates in the U.S. have dropped by more than 75%. It is not just a number; it is a sign of progress in today’s youth according to Americas health ranking.
In 2022, there were 900 babies born to teen mothers in Nebraska, 236 to mothers age 10-17, and 664 to mothers age 18-19 according to Americashealthrankings.org. Also, according to Worldpopulationreview.com, the general fertility rate in Nebraska was 62.5 births per 1,000 women ages 15–44. The states teen births rate was 13.1 births per 1,000 females age 15-19.
“Young parents often feel unprepared for all the responsibilities that come with raising a child, especially if they are trying to finish their education or enter the workforce,” NCHS young parent member Dianna Jones said. “Whatever life you envision for yourself and your child.”
By law, all schools receiving federal funding in the United States must provide accommodations for pregnant students. There are no public schools that do not provide for pregnant teenagers, and any institution that does not do so is in violation of federal law.
“It is great what Benson high school has available,” Human Growth teacher Mark Meier said. “I had about seven students that were teen parents, and I wished they would come down to talk even if they are set up, we can set them up.”
Teen parents face challenges like finding someone to take care of their children and where they are going to stay if they do not stay with parents. Babies need a lot of things, and teen moms need emotional support them throughout their parenthood.
The rate of teen pregnancy has gone down. It depends on the culture and on a lot of things, but there are ways to prevent pregnancy if people are sexually active. There are a lot of places where people can get different services for free and there are plenty of resources around Benson that assist young adults who are sexually active.
