The Black Student Leadership Council (BSLC) is a student driven club that was created by founder and former North high teacher John Jackson. It is a club for students to stay involved because not everyone is an athlete. The Black Student Leadership Council prepares their members for college and career.
Sponsor Marcie Muhammad tries to plug students into opportunities. This club helps students have their pathway laid out and motivates them.
“Without limitation, I would make it a culture and tradition that a student believes in themselves and Benson, make students believe in themselves,” Muhammad said.
Muhammad loves to know what the student’s issues are and what they need help with so that she can help them along with making a safe place for students. She tries to advocate for students and leads be an example.
“I believe being black is a mindset that people have, it is a mindset that connects you in your history not just to pass slavery, but into who we are,” Muhammad said.
“From a teacher’s perspective looking back at especially black students, I do not think that they are connecting school to their life, but I could be wrong,” Muhammad said.
Their first two years were building years for the BSLC, and this year is their core group; in five years, Muhammad hopes they can come back and have something to be proud of.
